Dream Dust
BY LANGSTON HUGHES
Gather out of star-dust,
Earth-dust,
Cloud-dust,
And splinters of hail,
One handful of dream-dust
Not for sale.
A single dream is a spec of dust and can easily drift away, but a handful of dreams can be grasped and held, something we should never give away. Some goals will slip through our hands, but many more will stay.
That’s our Dream-dust
Time has taught us that we must continue to gather our dreams, even the ones that seem foreign, unachievable, and out of this world.
That’s our Star-dust.
We must be grounded in our everyday achievements, like getting out of bed or quitting altogether.
That’s our Earth-dust.
We’ve learned to think big ideas, write them down, and provide Scholarly sources, because we do not plagiarize.
That’s our Cloud-dust.
Let’s look at the definition of a splinter.
A splinter is a fragment of a larger object or a foreign body that penetrates or is purposefully injected into a body. We must remove and cleanse ourselves of these invasions before they can infect us.
What is hail? Hail is a form of solid precipitation. A collection of raindrops with the potential to bear down on us, or as I think Langston meant, “The Haters” in our lives.
Do not let outside forces pummel our dreams.
Each handful of dreams is the sum of our aspirations, and the particles we leave behind are our struggles.
We do not sell our dreams, Because some of those dreams will be the bread crumbs of our path taken.
Many of us did not find the traditional route in life, and those bread crumbs of our dreams left behind are there to guide the future.

It is ok to let the dust collect; it is the dust that tells our story.
